Why Would China Give AI Away for Free?
Everyone is telling the same story about cheap Chinese AI, and they have it backwards. OpenAI and Anthropic executives are warning that free and powerful Chinese AI models will destroy the economics that pay for frontier research. They are treating the low price as the danger. The better question is the one nobody is asking. Why would China want to give AI away for free?
Look at how China has built technology before. It builds tools that collect data and extend control, and it ships those tools across emerging markets with those goals fully intact. So when a Chinese model shows up costing almost nothing, that is not generosity. This is not free technology for the masses. The cheap price is the hook, and the data flowing through the model is the catch. The model was never the prize. The data is.
This is the part American frontier labs already understand, because they run the same play in reverse. Anthropic and OpenAI charge you for the model while quietly keeping your data to train the next one. I have repeatedly written that the models themselves would end up as commodities, and that is now happening in front of our eyes. China may have simply accepted that reality sooner. When you think you are behind in the race, you stop chasing model revenue you were never going to capture, and you compete instead for the data and the deployment, because those are the things that compound.
That is what makes the American panic so dangerous. If free models drain the revenue that funds frontier work, our labs slow down or stop, while China keeps improving its own models on a steady diet of the world’s data. The cheap model is not the weapon. It is how the weapon gets in the door. The real risk is the data it gathers, the party that controls it, and everything China builds once our side has run out of money to keep building.
